Can AI shoppers see your products? A one minute check

A single character in your product's hidden data can take the whole product out of what Google and AI shoppers read. Nothing breaks on the page. Nothing appears in your dashboard. The product stops being described.

We found it in our own themes in September 2026 and fixed it. Checking your store takes about a minute.

What AI shoppers read

Every Shopify product page carries a block of data you never see. It lists the name, price, availability, reviews and barcode in a format built for machines. Google reads it to build rich results. ChatGPT and other assistants read it to answer questions like whether a jacket comes in a medium.

When that block is unreadable, those systems fall back to guessing from your page text, or they skip the product.

The one minute check

Paste a product URL into Google's Rich Results Test. It reads the same block your store publishes. If it reports an error, the block is dead, and everything in it goes with it: the name, the price, the availability, the rating, not only the part that failed.

Check three or four products rather than one. The fault only appears on products whose barcode starts with a zero, so it hides in part of a catalog while the rest looks fine.

Which products are affected

Any product whose barcode begins with a zero. Most UPCs do. If your barcodes come from a supplier or a manufacturer, you probably have some.

What it costs

A shopper who is already on the page still buys. What you lose is the shopper who has not found you yet: the rich result in Google, and the answer an assistant gives when someone asks it to find a black leather jacket in a medium.

The fix

If you run LX or MX, this was fixed in September 2026. Updating to the current version resolves it.

On any other theme, send your developer this:

The barcode is being printed as a number. It needs to be printed as text, and only when it has 8, 12, 13 or 14 digits.

Broken:

"gtin13": 0123456789012

Correct:

"gtin13": "0123456789012"

JSON does not allow a number to begin with a zero, so a single leading zero invalidates the entire block.

The check takes a minute. The fix is a pair of quotation marks.
